River Bar

The location of the Alaska Range nearly smack in the middle of the park means lots of glaciers - 16% of the park's +6,000,000 acres.  I'm on the north side of the mountains.  Lots of glaciers means lots of braided rivers.  They dump huge amounts of gravels and silt, and are constantly shifting course within the stream bed - but never coming close to filling bank-to-bank.

My home is just to the left.  This was taken from one fork of the Toklat River, south of the park road a few hundred yards. The park road runs at the base of the mountain

Two juvenile and one adult grizzly spent the morning around Eielson Visitor Center on the day I was working there.  I saw them jump around in and on a big pile of snow - then one juvenile slid ass-first, spread eagle down the snow slope.  Funniest thing i've seen in a long time.

The mountain decided to peak out for the first time in days. McKinley River in the foreground. The Muldrow Glacier comes down the canyon through the brown/gray rock.

Mountain avens blooming! Some cinquefoil and one or two other species are also starting to bloom.

Woolly bears!
